Chicago – Feb. 16, 2026 – The American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy® (ASTCT®) is pleased to announce Margaret MacMillan, MD, MSc, FRCPC, as the Society’s president for the 2026–2027 term. A nationally recognized leader in pediatric blood and marrow transplantation and cellular therapy, Dr. MacMillan brings decades of clinical expertise, research achievement and organizational leadership to the role.
Dr. MacMillan is professor of pediatrics and division director of the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota. She earned her MD and MSc from the University of Toronto and completed her pediatric residency and fellowship in pediatric hematology and oncology at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto. After completing a fellowship in pediatric blood and marrow transplantation at the University of Minnesota, she joined the faculty in 1999.
Her clinical practice focuses on allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation for children with malignant and non-malignant diseases. One of her primary research interests is optimizing the care for patients with Fanconi anemia, from diagnosis through transplantation and lifelong follow-up. Dr. MacMillan serves as director of the Kidz1stFund Comprehensive Fanconi Anemia Center at the University of Minnesota, which supports innovative cellular and gene therapy research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with this rare disorder.
Dr. MacMillan’s research also focuses on graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), with an emphasis on developing and implementing novel strategies to prevent and treat acute GVHD, as well as optimizing clinical trial design through improved risk stratification and endpoint selection. She serves as principal investigator for numerous clinical trials and has extensive experience navigating the regulatory requirements of translational research.
A long-standing contributor to ASTCT, Dr. MacMillan previously served as director-at-large, co-chaired of the Scientific Organizing Committee for the 2022 Tandem Meetings and has been a faculty member of the ASTCT Clinical Research Training Course since 2011, including eight years as co-chair. She has served as an associate editor of Transplantation and Cellular Therapy since 2018. Her leadership extends across the broader field, including service as past chair of the Department of Defense Bone Marrow Research Program, past co-chair of the CIBMTR® GVHD Working Committee and chair of the Institutional Review Board for the National Marrow Donor Program.
“It is a tremendous honor and privilege to serve as president of ASTCT,” said Dr. MacMillan. “I am deeply grateful for the outstanding leadership of Dr. David Porter, whose tenure leaves the Society in an exceptionally strong position and well prepared for the future.
We are entering a transformative era in our field of medicine. I am committed to driving ASTCT’s mission forward — to advancing hematopoietic cell transplantation and cellular therapy through groundbreaking research, comprehensive education, clinical excellence and effective advocacy.
