Assessing del(13q)/-13 in Multiple Myeloma

Results from a retrospective investigation identified deletion (13q)/monosomy 13 (del[13q]/-13) as an independent risk factor for poor outcomes in multiple myeloma (MM) patients receiving upfront autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT). The single-site study included 1,680 patients who underwent auto-HSCT during 2010-2021, with del[13q]/-13 confirmed in 591. Progression-free survival (PFS) was 37.3 months for participants with isolated del[13q]/-13 compared with 64.6 months for participants without del[13q]/-13 or any established high-risk cytogenetic abnormalities (HRCA). Median overall survival (OS) in the two groups was 105.4 months and 131 months, respectively. Patients with concurrent HRCA and del[13q]/-13 had the poorest outcomes, according to the study authors. In this subpopulation, PFS reached just 33.9 months and OS was only 81.6 months.
