ASTCT Staff Liaison - Anna Hawkshead
The Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Special Interest Group (NP/PA-SIG) provides a forum for NPs and PAs to exchange ideas and information. It also promotes their role in the BMT field. The SIG hopes to focus on education, jobs, networking and other opportunities as it continues to grow and expand its presence in ASTCT, and we want to use our website as a tool for communication and education.
Why You Should Join
Our SIG enables NPs and PAs to become more involved and have a voice in ASTCT. We are defining new ways to support NPs and PAs in the BMT field and are embarking on new projects to increase their knowledge and resources. Our website offers networking, education, practice and research opportunities. During the annual TCT Meetings we have our own clinical education conference — sponsored by the ASTCT Education Committee — devoted to NPs, PAs and fellows. It is a great opportunity to learn from BMT experts and obtain practical clinical information that helps us care for our transplant patients.
Steering Committee members are reaching out to you and encouraging all current BMT Advanced Practice PAs and NPs to join the SIG. We must unite to achieve great things in the years to come for our BMT practice.
How You Can Join
Membership in the NP/PA-SIG is open to any ASTCT member. It is expected that those most likely to join will be physician assistants and nurse practitioners who are credentialed and privileged to provide clinical care and who are ASTCT affiliate members. If you would like to join the SIG, you must first be a member of the ASTCT. If you are already a member of ASTCT, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to join this SIG.
Read the NP/PA-SIG charter for more information on the SIG's purpose, membership and committees, including committee composition, selection and responsibilities.
In response to an anticipated workforce shortage among HCT providers, the National Marrow Donor Program developed the System Capacity Initiative to address how it would affect our current care delivery system. One area of focus of the Advanced Practice Provider Working Group is recruitment and retention of nurse practitioners and physician assistants to stem cell transplantation. We recognize that a large part of this effort involves offering education modules to assure proficiency in the role while providing the knowledge to practice at the highest level.
Content on this site will appeal to providers of all experience levels, from novice to seasoned practitioners:
Employer and Job Seeker Resources
Are you considering hiring a physician assistant or nurse practitioner for your practice? Read about the role of the advanced practice provider (APP) in HCT. As part of the NMDP System Capacity Initiative, we have developed recommendations for optimal work models for APPs working in this engaging — and growing — field.
This was a collaborative effort from many transplant centers, large and small, across the country. These guidelines — developed by APPs at those centers and their program medical directors —will help you understand what APPs can offer your program and how to use them to the full extent of their practicing license. We have also provided recommendations on salary, vacation, and benefits. There are more than 900 APPs within the BMT field across the country; we are excited to be part of this growth, which benefits individual practices and helps to provide a high level of quality care to patients.
ASTCT offers a Job Connection service, where nurse practitioners and physician assistants can search for open positions in bone and marrow transplantation and BMT centers can post open positions. Job seekers can search employment listings anonymously and free of charge, and can set a job alert and be notified when new positions that meet their search criteria are posted. For a nominal fee, transplant centers can list all open positions. This service is not limited to ASTCT members, and we hope you will find it useful in your search.
The TCT Meetings of ASTCT & CIBMTR (combined annual meetings of ASTCT and the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research) took place Feb. 21-25, in Houston, Texas.
The Clinical Education Conference for NPs, PAs and Fellows will take place October, 2020 in Miami, FL.
2020 NP/PA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT NOMINATION
The NP/PA SIG is seeking nominations for one individual to receive the ASTCT NP/PA Lifetime Achievement Award that will be presented at the TCT Meetings on February 21, 2020 in Orlando.
Please help recognize a colleague for their outstanding work and dedication to NP/PA practice in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) by nominating them for this prestigious award. Both NPs and PAs qualify, but must be ASTCT NP/PA SIG members. The deadline for nominations is December 1, 2019 at 11:59pm. Please send your nominations to Anna Hawkshead at the ASTCT Headquarters (email@example.com). This award will be presented to an ASTCT NP/PA SIG member who has made significant contributions to the field of HCT through consistent, high-quality contributions as it applies to NP/PA practices. These contributions include publications, presentations, mentorship, and leadership that have impacted our specialty.
The recipient of this award will receive a recognition plaque to be presented at the conference and will receive a waiver of the TCT Meetings registration fee.
