President's Message: The Power of Our Community

One of the most rewarding parts of my job as a pediatric BMT and cellular therapy physician is receiving gratitude from parents for helping their sick child. It is a profound honor and privilege to be trusted with their most precious gift. Even when clinical outcomes are not optimal, families express a deep appreciation, because our teams are entirely committed to doing their best.

In the midst of the daily challenges, administrative hurdles, and frustrations that can accompany academic medicine, it is vital to pause and remember how fortunate we truly are to be in this field of medicine. We are blessed to possess the aptitude, the desire, and the distinct calling to heal and innovate. We are privileged to have the intellectual curiosity to discover new therapies, push scientific boundaries, and drastically improve the lives of the patients we serve. Pioneering novel research and managing complex clinical care is a path fraught with obstacles, but we persevere — reminded of Sir Winston Churchill's timeless counsel to "never give in."

The Power of Our Collective Community

This monumental work is never done in isolation. The ability to impact human lives so deeply is a profound gift made possible only though the power of our collective ASTCT community:

  • Our brilliant basic scientists uncovering foundational insights;
  • Our dedicated physician scientists bridging the gap from lab to bedside;
  • Our skilled clinical physicians, APPs, nurses, and pharmacists delivering precise, compassionate care;
  • And our healthcare administrators providing the framework for us to succeed.

Most importantly, it relies on ASTCT to unite us all under our shared vision to provide safe and curative hematopoietic transplantation and cellular therapies to all patients in need.

As we approach the Thanksgiving season, I invite each of you to take a moment from the frantic pace of your daily responsibilities to reflect on and be thankful for our place in this remarkable field of medicine.

Thank you for your brilliance, your tireless dedication, and your unwavering commitment to our science and our patients. I am incredibly grateful for and proud of each and every one of you.
